Our initiative brought 3 jazz women player/instructors from South Africa and Botswana to speak and play in New Orleans and New York City. These women designed and run a girls jazz camp, Jazz Camp for Female Instrumentalists Mamelodi (JCFI) and a music school back home. Since the beginning of the pandemic, REVA has responded with the creation of an online program: Global Jazzwomen Hangout, hosted by Sibongile Buda (aka Ms. Buda Bass), South African jazz bassist/entrepreneur and founder of JCFI. Nokwanda Nkala is active professionally as a jazz saxophonist and classical clarinetist as well as working in arts administration, including her own entrepreneurial ventures. An accomplished and resourceful musician, Nkala has been repairing her own horns for years. Through this grant, she will be receiving training videos, tools, online support and coaching to help set up her own instrument repair business in South Africa. Ms. Buda Bass Sibongile Buda, known as Ms Buda Bass, is a Mamelodi born, South African performing artist. She is a bassist, composer, music teacher, band conductor, founder and programme Director. Her passion for music is traced back to her grandmother who plays an African drum in church; her love for music emanates from growing up in a musical background following on her grandmother’s footsteps. This lead to a discovery of a music programme known as Committed Artist for Cultural Advancement (CAFCA) through childhood friends. Sibongile is currently working as a music teacher at CAFCA, which focuses on enhancement of music skills to children from disadvantaged communities. She is a founder and programme director of a female led organisation - Jazz Camp for Female Instrumentalists Mamelodi (JCFI) - the purpose of which is to groom and empower females with artistic skills from an early age and to provide a platform for female artists to showcase their talent. Sibongile’s first concert was in 2005 at Enoch Sontonga hall at Unisa. She subsequently participated in a cultural showcase in Delft (Netherlands) with the CAFCA Ensemble in 2007, in 2008 she performed with CAFCA Music Ensemble in Beijing and in 2009 at the Molde Jazz Festival with JCFI Norway band. In 2011 she performed at the Jazz Education Network (JEN) conference in New Orleans, LA, USA and participated at the SAJE conference at University of Cape Town (UCT). Born in Georgia and raised in Minnesota, Ella moved to Chicago in 2021, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from DePaul University in 2025. Heralded by the Twin Cities Jazz Festival as "ultra-talented," Ella performs frequently throughout the Midwest both as a side-woman and bandleader with her original compositions. In 2024, Ella became the first female trumpeter to tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, expanding her reach from national to international. Ella’s musical upbringing began in Minnesota. There she studied with Steve Strand, Prince's longtime lead trumpeter and played in the state’s salient youth honors jazz ensembles including Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands, Minnesota All-State Jazz Band under the direction of Patty Darling, and the Dakota Combo under the direction of Michael Cain. REVA’s own Jessica Jones, another festival co-coordinator, joined to facilitate the rehearsal and provide a couple of the arrangements. Then Saturday morning all the members of the combined bands gave inspiring workshops for 50 local young female instrumentalists in a program titled "Camp Her", organized by festival co-coordinator Akhutleleng Kekwaletswe, that ended with the girls all sitting in with the women for a crowded and spirited rendition of Miriam Makeba’s “The Click Song”. Sunday was festival day, and it was perfect weather to be playing outdoors at a rooftop restaurant in the business district of Gaborone. The show opened with local children performing traditional and popular music in a marimba ensemble, then featured each of the two bands and closed with the large combined band. The JCFI Band played a set that ranged from swinging blues to two ori, followed by the Fleek band’s saxophone-heavy big band arrangements and soulful voices. Improvisation was abounding, and even included a mock dance-off for solo space in the violin section. Vocalists brought warmth and energy to the combined band, especially in the encore performance of “The Click Song,” which got the audience singing and dancing along. Two schools, Waterford Kamhlaba and Sifundzani School, hosted the international group of female educators, who delivered workshops. This year, a separate Vocal Workshop was held, and mentorship provided. A public performance of the joint, international bands presenting original music and music by female composers was sold out.
